Quitting cold turkey is likely effective for preventing further use, but this prevents people from getting value from addictive yet important apps like Twitter, Facebook, etc.
In order to have the best of both worlds, it's likely that various modification/blocking tools will need to be used. For example, "portal" type tools like Musi and Roote's Tweetscape will enable users to take advantage of YouTube and Twitter respectively without addictive feeds and recommenders. "Blocker" type tools like Freedom, News Feed Eradicator, and Opal either block entire sites or addictive parts of sites. Given that they are easier to create, they are a more general-purpose solution.
